The Leiden Observatory (STRW) carries out fundamental and curiosity driven research. Do you have affinity with academia and would you like to support astronomy research? Come work at the Faculty of Science of the Leiden University as a Research software engineer.
What will you do
The Leiden Observatory is looking for an astronomical software engineer to help research groups with projects that require complex software solutions such as data reduction pipelines and instrumentation data flows. While the specific duties of this job will depend on the needs of research groups, potential projects include:
- Manage the data flow for the METIS instrument;
- Improve and optimise the Euclid data reduction pipeline;
- Support the next generation of ELT instrumentation, such as ELT/PCS;
- Develop software for NASA’s Habitable World Observatory.
Where you will work
You will work together with the STRW ICT group, a small, flexible team of highly trained people that also maintain and develop the scientific computer infrastructure.

- A minimum of 3-5 years relevant work experience in an academic environment;
- Academic work and thinking level;
- Fluent use of English in speech and writing.
If you immediately recognise yourself in this profile, or if do you not quite meet all the requirements, but you believe that this is the right job for you, we look forward to your application!
