We seek a candidate with strong expertise and proven research record in areas such as software engineering, AI system engineering, software product development, technology management, digital transformation, business applications of (generative or agentic) AI, software analytics, or AI for software engineering. The ideal candidate has demonstrated the ability to combine technical depth with organizational impact. You will complement and strengthen our research on software and AI, and their application in business and government. We are particularly interested in candidates with the ability to teach software, data, and/or AI courses at the master level tailored to students from different science backgrounds. The successful candidate will contribute to the Business Studies specialization of our Computer Science program, in which our institute offers courses on (the interface between) computer science and business studies. This includes teaching several courses and supervising master and bachelor students during their thesis research projects, often including an internship in a company or government organization. The teaching duties for this position will start in Fall 2026, allowing ample time for integration into our academic community.  In addition to research and teaching, the successful candidate is expected to secure external research funding to build their own research group and to supervise bachelor’s and master’s students. The successful candidate will be embedded in the Software and AI in Business research cluster at LIACS, the Computer Science and AI institute of Leiden University, offering a collaborative and supportive environment that values cross-group collaborations. 

What you will do

  • Conduct independent research in computer science and business;
  • Teach two courses annually related to your research as the main lecturer and contribute to other relevant courses and educational activities;
  • Obtain the University Teaching Qualification (BKO) within 2 years;
  • Supervise bachelor and master students doing their thesis research project;
  • (Co-)supervise PhD students;
  • Secure external funding for research projects;
  • Participate in institutional committees and contribute to academic activities within the institute, Leiden University, and the broader Dutch academic community;
  • Contribute to the development and promotion of the Business Studies specialization for Computer Science;

The Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) is the Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Institute of the Faculty of Science of Leiden University. We offer courses at the Bachelor and Master of Science levels in the core areas of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science, and in the interdisciplinary areas of Business, Creative Intelligence, and Bioinformatics. What you bring

  • PhD degree in Computer Science or a similar field;
  • An academic, creative, and open mindset;
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and in a supervisory role with students;
  • Demonstrated research independence at the postdoctoral level or beyond, evidenced by a strong publication record;
  • Excellent proficiency in English is required;
  • Experience in teaching and supervising students, preferably at the master level;

What we offer

A position commensurate with your level of experience, initially for one year. After a positive evaluation of the progress of the research and personal compatibility the contract can be extended further to a permanent one. This contract falls under the CLA of Dutch Universities;

  • A salary between € 4.728,- and € 6.433,- gross per month, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours) (payscale 11);
  • A holiday allowance (8%), an end-of-year bonus (8,3%), and an attractive pension scheme at ABP;
  • Full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs for home-to-work travel;
  • Flexible working hours: as a standard, you are entitled to a minimum of 29 leave days on the basis of a full-time working week of 38 hours; you can also save for extra leave, for example by working 40 hours a week, and in this way accrue an extra 96 leave hours, or exchange 96 leave hours for a 36-hour week.
  • Lots of options when it comes to secondary employment conditions; we can, for example, discuss options for a sabbatical or paid parental leave. Within our terms of employment individual choices model, you can exchange leave days and/or salary for benefits such as an advantageous sports subscription and bicycle scheme;
  • If your work allows it, hybrid working is possible within the Netherlands;
  • A home-working allowance (day and internet allowance) and attention for good workplaces. The University will also provide you with a laptop.

The starting date is negotiable, but not later than March 2026. We are looking to fill this positon as soon as possible.
